UnSlut - Documentary Screening Q & A 2016

What's the Naked Truth Film Club about and what gave you the idea to do it?

The idea came from my activism when I realised critics of the adult industry were getting things wrong in wildly exaggerated ways. Some of the things I heard like "Girls are raped into this business, groomed and trafficked, manipulated etc" had me thinking someone had to take these people to school on the topic.

The film club was a way of  using films as a base for the adult business to discuss issues with the media and public concerned about the porn business. Theres a lot of terrified parents out there who seem to think allowing the powers that be to reign the internet in is a good thing but not indful of what that involves.

Why did you choose The UnSlut Project as your first film?

I watch a lot of unusual documentaries and UnSlut resonated with me in a way that compelled me to do it as my inaugural event to launch my film club.

I was nervous that some wouldn't get  what I was doing until I was prompted by people like Myles (Jackman) and Jerry (Barnett) who encouraged me by saying it was a great idea as it was rare for the adult industry to step out into the spotlight and answer for anything. I'm sure some people find it annoying but I dont think any ugly question should be left off the table. Een if people shun me its proof then that there must be truth if no one has an answer to questions thrown at us

What is UKAP?

It's an association for adult content producers. It's been running for over 10 years now. At its height we had nearly everybody who was anybody in UK adult video as members. The membership has diversified in recent years as many shut shop because of the recent changes in the law and regulations. It wasnt financially worth their while so didnt care about the business enough to want to fight their corner. Now it seems a lot of people are in business for themselves with webcams and clip stores so the traditional model has changed but the adult business is still very much alive and trying to find its identity in the midst of the free content boom. You can't beat free

What do you mean?

Well. The business model of shooting content and sticking it on a website expecting sales to come in has changed. Girls are cultivating their own fan bases now and the only companies with money to pay well are the same companies behind the tube sites being fed a steady stream of our content for free. I predict the tube sites will last for a while with content being uploaded from clip stores next which is going to piss these model off when they find out.

The Documentary isn't about the porn business which makes it an unusual topic to discuss for an adult business perspective.

That's why I chose it!

It's an emotive documentary that has a lot to do with people in sex work and I'm glad the distributors of the film agreed  for me to go ahead and screen it.  I was nervous that they may not want their film associated with the porn business. Then again I was nervous the manager of the cinema wasnt going to screen it as he knew who I was and thought by the title I was going to show a hardcore film! I got him access to a viewing copy online and he liked it and saw what i was trying to do ad was a lot more amenable

One thing I'm surprised no one brought up is the adult business perpetuating the slut illusion via our products. It's an obvious contradiction giving us a license to answer these burning questions. No one ever says that doing porn gives women a license to explore their sexuality in diverse ways. You can be a sut on the day job and a lady after you've showered the muck off then go to curch nd confess your sins then go right back to sinning come Monday morning 9 o'clock!

You could say we celebrate being slutty in the adult business and that's what makes radical feminists mad because they refuse to acknowledge that thi is all down to choice and consent. They really don't want to hear that. This is precisely the kind of thing that needs to be said so we can move on from it and not be imprisoned by it.

Another thing the film brought up within me was slut shaming creating the pornstar in the first place.

What do you mean?

Porn stars are stereotypically thought of as coming  from abusive backgrounds. Therefore it seems to me that some may have been psychologically and verbally abused in that they were told by their parents they were "ugly, stupid and would never amount to anything in life" then one day they  meet a photographer or producer who tells them they are beautiful and takes some great looking pictures that make them feel better about themselves.

Some might see that as manipulation

If you dont ask you dont get.

How do you think girls get into this business in the first place?  Often times they find someone and get their break that way but sometimes the old traditional methods like "Oh my god youre so beautful you should be a model" is enough to get girls in. Even if their motive is money then thats a matter for them to deal with.  I normally advise girls to  reconsider if that is their only reason to do it as you cant reverse your situation when its out there on the internet.

Flipping back to the manipulation, the point is no one gets anywhere unless you are nice and that's what these hysterical critics don't understand. The psychological abuse  created a low self esteem in that individual in the first place. If you dont like porn then society shouldnt create porn stars but to be honest I would say very few girls I've ever knowm have come into the business from this kind of background. The best porn stars have come from a repressed sexuality where religion and faith was oppressive. These girls are susceptible to porn because their inner desires are at boiling point and porn being the devil that tempted them to sin is an easy excuse to fall back on. Abused victims do not make good porn stars. You can see it in their eyes

Porn is very rarely the problem. It's all down to the mindset of the end user.

What drives you to do the activism you do?

The adult business has been very good to me. Not so much these days on a financial level but it has over the years and I've made some great friends from it that I felt I owed the business something by defending it but there's a lot of young blood coming in that don't get that. Even though they'll benefit from my efforts it just needed to be done. There might come a time I will run out of steam for it all and just quietly shuffle off into the sunset. Until that day comes I'm still here full of vim and vigour crusading for sexual freedom

Is there a back story to the Naked Truth? Why did you call yourself that name?

I literally woke up and thought of that name a few days after the Stop Porn Culture counter demo I was big on them knowing the truth so the whole Naked thing coupled with the truth was a no brainer and was acceptable in most places discussing porn related things. I found people were uncomfortable about nudity and the truth so put together seemed like a natural fit to what I was about.

The podcasts I did were mainly a way of conveying information to my peers without having to repeat myself which is why I try to record as many things as I can direct from source, hence the naked truth. Its not particularly original or clever. Its what it is. The naked truth.

Looking at your twitter it seems you are very outspoken on adult industry affairs Are you a spokesman for the UK porn industry

Hell no! I'm a spokesman for me. I have as much authority in this business by virtue of the time served in it. I dont see many people doing this and the ones I do see standing up for rights I am down with regardless of whether they are my friend in this game or not. I'm all about symbiosis and the business working on a united front. Its not about being friends but its nicer if we all get along I guess but its not necessary to get things done and move in the same direction.

I might not be the best man for the job but I will take his place until he gets here

How did the first screening go?

I got 80-ish people in attendance and that's a good turn out for a first event.  I'd love to pack The Prince Charles at full capacity but meanwhile I am happy with the turn out I got.

So what can we look forward to next?

I've been in discussions with various film makers and some films already still in production and the response has been good for me to screen their movies. If I can build on a good following I want to tie the screenings in with other activities so producers who come to our meets get to network with different groups thoughout the day. ldeally I'd like to do an screening  every 3 months

What fillms can we look forward to?

Films like Inside Lara Roxx and Cam Girlz, Hotgirls Wanted, The Trouble With The F Word are all important films that can be used as a base for insightful discussion but these films take a lot of organising before they get shown. Its not as if you buy a DVD and give it to the cinema to throw up on the screen. There is a process you have to go through if a film has not been classified for UK exhibition and I want the films to have a decent showing in a nice venue with a sizeable screen which lends more importance to it, especially where the media is invited to attend

Why do you want the media involved?

This is a rare opportunity for the adult business to engage its critics on issues that left to the media, come up with the same tired responses that agitate us in the business which is why no one trusts the media. The point of dialogue is to educate the people that matter to engage us correctly with more challenging an incisive questions so we can reach a mutual level of understanding and tolerance. Porn is hhere to stay. There is no forcing it underground. That would be very bad

What would be the most annoying line of question for you?

Kids! I hate when people lower the tone by coming up with the "what about the kids!" and even suggesting child porn is produced legitimately and freely available on the web. That foolishness needs to stop and its a topic that destroys dialogue when that card is pulled out of the deck it really becomes that elephant in the room

You make it sound like a political statement

Its not far off! Dont get me started on that one

It sounds interesting. You were involved with the facesitting protest and the porn laws outside parliament right?

Yep. I'm the mad man on the soap box that truly believes that all this nonsense is connected to lead to other things. The government arent interested in porn and protecting the kids but they'll sure use it in a way to serve other ulterior motives?

And that would be?

 To control the internet.

To ringfence the UK off from the rest of the world like China did would be perfect. The signs are there already. Cameron ignored the votes against the ISP filters and had them implemented anyway. How is that democratic? Then when the filters could not differentiate between porn sex sites and help, advice and support sites for sexual health services and counselling is when we see the power of censorship at work.

The internet is a great way to influence people. Connect the dots and you have Rupert Murdochs printed matter empire losing out to the net, the government are losing control to the internet like any other business so they need a side door in to install an infrastructure to make their reasons for legislation legitimiate. Like the investigatory powers bill and the constant terror threat with ISIS. Porn is perfect! No one is going to defend that especally when they play the protect the poor kids card.

There are too many examples to support what I  am saying in recent years. ATVOD, porn laws, regulations, anti porn campaign, sex ed blocking and more to distract from the real issues.  Even OBJECT were being funded by The National Lottery! Roz Hardie forver banged on about Fake Taxi that I thought she was on  retainer to promote them. The porn issue is not even that important. You can avoid porn if you dont want it in your life. My view is, the system wasnt broke so why does it need fixing now? Maybe I should do a screening of Citizen Four to wake people up to what is really going on.
